Start of new term always comes with mixed feelings: there is excitement about the term and the need for a daily routine; yet there is nerves, worry and apprehension on what the term might bring. For the first day back in school, it is essential that teachers do all they can to ensure that all pupils feel good about being back and that they are not made to feel bad about being in school. Teachers need to bare in mind that some pupils feel anxiety about being in school and that just focussing on strict rules without positive encouragement is not the way to help them feel good about being in school. As with anything, balance is key: rules but also encouregement!
